Let’s cut to the chase! This applies to both households that ban, and embrace, shoes in the home.
You can partially clean your home just by walking around
If you have a dusty house, your socks pick up dust bunnies, bits of skin, strands of hair or stuff from shoes (like dog poo or soil). Whether you’ve got carpeted or solid floors, the static electricity from the socks interacting with the floor help pick up some of this material. Thousands of dust mites can live off a small bit of dust and can cause mild to serious health problems. This can range from sneezing, coughing and eczema to asthma attacks. It’s a good idea to remove the cruft off your socks before throwing them into the washing machine. Lint rollers such as IKEA’s BÄSTIS handy (it’s a good idea to stock up with lots of refills) do quite a good job.
You can protect your feet
This may seem obvious. However, socks come in quite handy especially if you have old wooden floorboards, such as those dating back past World War 2. Our child inadvertently exposed a nail with the sharp end sticking out as the tricycle zoomed up and down the hallway. It must have popped out from all the vibration on the floorboards.
